The secret is out and we now know what Facebook has been building - Graph Search

Revealed at their much anticipated press release on January 15th the service is a ‘smarter internal search engine’.
As researched by Carver Media graph Search will let you search within your social Facebook graph for specifics - the example given was  ‘which of my friends live in New York?’. Your results will be ranked based on the friends you’ve had the most interaction with - as such, closer friends will appear higher up the results list.
Photo’s and stories will be ranked by number of likes, and, more importantly for businesses, check-in’s and local business likes will also be searchable. So you’d be able to search for a hairdresser in your local area, and have the one with the highest number of likes by your friends show up at the top of the list.
Essentially Facebook have announced a personalised search service that uses the intelligence behind your social interactions to provide results relevant to you.
